David Otunga Wins Custody, Jennifer Hudson Drops Protective Order In Their Split (UPDATE)
UPDATE (11/28/17 at 11:07 a.m.):
Jennifer Hudson and David Otunga have settled on a custody arrangement for their son — temporarily, at least.
And it's good news for David in more ways than one.
That's because the athlete has been granted primary custody of 8-year-old David Jr., according to TMZ.
Due to Jennifer's busy work schedule — she's currently in London for The Voice U.K — the boy will spend the majority of his time with his dad in Los Angeles.
This isn't a huge change from how things were before, though, as David has been his son's primary caregiver for years due to Jen's travel schedule.
Also? The American Idol alum has dropped her protective order, which prohibited David from having contact with her or their son.
Stay tuned to Wetpaint for more on their split, and keep clicking for why they broke up in the first place!
Original story (11/14/17 at 10:47 a.m.):
It’s over for Jennifer Hudson and David Otunga.
Not only did The Voice coach and her fiancé end their 10-year relationship, the singer also requested a protective order against him.
The split was announced on Thursday, November 16.
“Today, Jennifer requested and received a protective order against her ex-fiancé,” the statement continued.
“Jennifer’s actions are solely taken in the best interest of their son.”
The 36-year-old and her former man have an 8-year-old son named David Daniel Otunga Jr.
Following the news, the former pro wrestler’s attorney, Tracy M. Rizzo, released a statement on her client’s behalf.
"David Otunga has been trying to negotiate the terms of an amicable parenting agreement with Ms. Hudson for several weeks now,” the statement said.
“However, when it became apparent to Ms. Hudson that Mr. Otunga would be the parent granted residential care of the child, as a result of Mr. Otunga being the child's primary caregiver while Ms. Hudson pursues her career all over the world, Ms. Hudson decided to file a meritless Petition for Order of Protection in an effort to gain an unfair advantage in the custody dispute.”
The Dreamgirls star and David got engaged in 2008 and welcomed their son in 2009.
"As a result of Mr. Otunga's career in the WWE, Ms. Hudson felt that she could give an award winning performance in court to portray herself as the victim,” the statement said.
“Mr. Otunga has never abused or harassed Ms. Hudson or their son, and it is unfortunate, especially in today's climate, that she would feel the need to make these false allegations against him."
The statement continued, “Mr. Otunga looks forward to his day in court and in being awarded the residential care of the parties' only child."
